Drive safely with Air bags for driver and passengers - Autos - Cars

Fatal head and chest injuries in motor vehicle crashes and other safety concerns have led to the development of bags. An air bag is a vehicle safety device which a motorist lands on during a collision as it consist of a flexible envelop designed to inflate quickly. Most air bags are folded into the steering wheel. These bags provide direct protection to a drivers head and chest by absorbing energy of the impact during contact with the vehicles interior such as steering wheel, dashboard or windshield. It is estimated that bags reduce the risk of death in a direct frontal crash by about 30 percent. All new cars have air bag protection, but some old cars don't. So when you buy a car, you should make sure it has a built-in air bag to assure safety while driving. But remember that air bags are only the secondary protection mechanism in the event of a crash. The primary protection is the seat belt and when used correctly, seat belts can be the difference between life and death.

The correct use of air bags and seat belts are of such concerns for the authorities that they want to increase awareness among drivers by including related questions on drivers license tests. In many DMV test questions and answers sites, you will see questions on how to properly use these safety features. Knowing about and using seatbelts and airbags are critical to safe driving and so, the test administrators will be closely watching you during the DMV driving practice test.

Risks from air bags: Children are smaller and more delicate than adults. Sometimes, airbags can be dangerous for them. Children can get trapped under airbags and suffocate. In the event of a crash, the resulting pressure from the airbags on their face or chest could be fatal. It is always better to have children sit on the back seat, in their child seats. For older children, use of booster seats is better. Adult drivers and passengers should always be sure to maintain at least ten inches gap from the airbags. Sitting too close when an airbag deploys can cause injury. These bags are meant to work with seat belts and not to replace them.

The combination of a seat belt and the bag offers maximum protection, partly because they help the driver stay in position, maintain control of the vehicle and not get thrown around in a crash, helping avoid secondary collisions.

Since model year 1998, all new cars sold have been required to have airbags on both driver and passenger sides. All new cars have dual air bags (front & side airbags) too, for better protection from injuries. Disabling an airbag can be dangerous. Federal law prohibits dealers and repair shops from disabling airbags. As a driver, you may not have control over an accident. However, choosing to drive a car with air bags and wearing a seatbelt definitely help save your life and the life of passengers.
