Wheelchair Cars Make Transport More Accessible To Disabled People - Business

Wheelchair accessible vehicles make life so much easier for those thousands, and probably millions of people in the UK who are suffering because of their mobility problems. The ones among us, who take running and even walking for granted, don't even realize how difficult these simple activities can be for those who are physically challenged. Though wheelchair cars have been around for many decades now, and they did ease the mobility issues a bit, but these gadgets were never exactly meant for carrying the person over long distances. The automobiles that can do so, such as cars, vans and jeeps were usually not very wheelchair-friendly as well. And thus, carrying the person over long distances always remained a challenge.

What Are These Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles?

Wheelchair accessible vehicles are vehicles where the wheelchair can be moved up easily. Honestly, we have had these vehicles for many years now. However, only larger vehicles such as minibuses and vans could be used to transport a wheelchair. However, the problem is that very few homes had these larger vehicles, because of the high cost, the parking issues and so on. It was also quite impractical to have one of these larger vehicles for a small family, even if the family had a member with mobility problems. Thus, the physically challenged person had to stay back, even when the others were traveling, and this of course, added to the depression and anguish.

However there's some wonderful news now. These days, we have several wheelchair accessible vehicles in smaller versions, and many of them are from the leading automobile makers such as Volkswagen, Renault, Peugeot and others. They are specially designed with a ramp access so that the wheelchair can get in easily. Family members can easily fix and strap the wheelchair on these wheelchair vans and cars. So this means that the person does not need to be physically lifted out from the wheelchair and carried on to the automobile, which honestly can be quite embarrassing. Of course it is inconvenient for the person and for the family members too.

The ramp can be easily attached easily either on the back side of the vehicle, or on any of the sides. And in some instances, the wheelchair user may even drive the vehicle. To make this happen, the vehicles are adapted in several ways. For instance, the brake and accelerator pedals can be controlled through pulleys or buttons.

Since these wheelchair accessible vehicles are much smaller than those that could accommodate the wheelchair earlier, small families can finally afford to buy one. Plus, they don't need much space for parking or garaging as well. So finally, the family with a mobility challenged person can have a vehicle that can be used to transport the wheelchair and the person easily. This not only keeps the family together, but more importantly, keeps the spirit of the challenged person high. A family that travels together is a family that remains happy.
