Famous Movie Cars - Entertainment - Movies

Unfortunately, most movies don't include their vehicles in their list of cast in the credits. Admittedly, in many cases, this would be strange, but there are some important films where the cars themselves become a part of the movie. In this article, I will assist our overworked friend IMDb by discussing some of the most famous cars in movie history.

#5 The Ectomobile: Ghostbusters

The Ectomobile was one of the most well recognized films after it co-starred in the smash-hit film Ghostbusters in 1984. The car is actually a 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor, that has been substantially redecorated with futuristic technology on its roof. The car itself has a couple of important scenes. First, we get an origin story, where the poor car is purchased and rebuit by the Ghostbusters. Next, we have a music-video-like scene, where we see the car driving around the streets of Manhattan. The car went on to co-star in the sequel Ghostbusters 2 in 1989.

#4 Christine: Christine

Christine is the only car on this list to have an entire film named after itself. She is a sentient car who decides that murdering human beings is the best way to express discontent with the oppressive, hierarchical institutions that disallow automobiles from expressing their autonomy (or something). The car itself is a 1958 Plymouth Fury. Unfortunately, Christine does not survive her rage against humanity, and is ultimately crushed in a junkyard (we can only assume this was special effect, but I didn't see the usual "No cars were harmed..." disclaimer). It is implied, though, that she can rebuilt herself, and will continue her murderous ways.

#3 The Time Machine: Back to the Future

The time machine in the Back to the Future series never receives a name, but it doesn't really need one. It is one of the most important characters in the series. It is actually a DeLorean DMC-12, a Northern Irish sports car. The car is mentioned on a number of occasions, especially when Doc Brown says, "Well I figured if you were going to build a time machine into a car, why not do it in style?" The car also provides a fun surprise at the end of the movie, when we learn that Doc Brown has fitted the car so that it can fly.

#2 The Batmobile: Batman and Batman Begins

I'm cheating a little bit here by including two cars from two films fifteen years apart, but part of the story of the Batmobile is the way that it changes. The version from the 1989 film was actually an extremely modified Chevy Impala. However, so little was left of the original car that it is almost unrecognizable. In the film, the car had a number of fictional features, including the most recognizable jet engine. For the film Batman Begins, the Batmobile was a completely customized vehicle. In the story, it was originally a bridging vehicle, designed to jump across bodies of water. Batman uses the vehicle to jump from rooftop to rooftop. The Batmobile is ultimately destroyed in The Dark Knight, where we find out that it had a motorcycle hiding inside.

#1 Aston Martin DB5: James Bond Films

The number one spot on this list goes to the Aston Martin DB5, the car that Sean Connery's incarnation of James Bond drives Goldfinger. In fact, the DB5 became so much the iconic car of James Bond, that it appeared in another four James Bond films, and was driven both by Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig. James Bond is the coolest man who never lived, and, as we all know, the car makes the man. I'll leave the rest of that syllogism to the reader.

Unfortunately, IMDb doesn't provide us with casting information for cars, but I hope this article can help bring some recognition to the vehicles that have helped made movies more enjoyable.
